I create content\u2014mainly blog posts\u2014for the Ahrefs blog, which generates around ~300,000 visits per month (from Google alone).<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/1-ahrefs-blog-traffic.png\" alt=\"Site Explorer overview for Ahrefs blog\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>How did I become a content creator for such a popular blog? Well, I\u2019ll talk about it later in the post. But before you carry on reading, I want you to know there are many paths to becoming a content creator. The path I followed is <strong>merely<\/strong>&nbsp;one of them. But since it\u2019s the only one I know, it\u2019s the one I\u2019ll&nbsp;share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s begin with some fundamentals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a content creator?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A content creator is someone who creates written, audio, video, or visual content for a digital platform like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or a&nbsp;blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can be working in-house for a company (like me) or agency, freelancing, or doing their own thing (e.g., influencers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does a content creator do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>They create content. (Duh!) Besides that, they may&nbsp;also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-marketing-strategy\/\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-strategy\/\">content strategy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Manage a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-calendar\/\">content calendar<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Research content ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Design and edit visuals.<\/li>\n<li>Record and edit videos.<\/li>\n<li>Produce podcasts.<\/li>\n<li>Do <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/seo-basics\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-basics\/\">basic SEO<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Have a deep understanding of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/marketing-channels\/\">channels<\/a>&nbsp;they produce content for, including the latest updates and changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much do content creators make?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no limit to how much a content creator can&nbsp;make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how much you make depends on whether you\u2019re working in-house, freelancing, or doing your own thing. You may also earn more if&nbsp;you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have subject matter expertise.<\/li>\n<li>Have a sizeable following on the platform where you create content.<\/li>\n<li>Have a well-known and well-respected brand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/content-creator-jobs\/salary\/\">Zippia<\/a>, the median content creator salary is $52,000 annually. However, some content creators have been known to earn up to six figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Jon Morrow of <a href=\"https:\/\/smartblogger.com\/\">SmartBlogger<\/a>&nbsp;used to charge up to $2.50 per word when he was freelancing. That\u2019s $5,000 for a 2,000-word post. One article per week means Jon\u2019s making six figures a&nbsp;year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/2-jon-morrow-fee.png\" alt=\"Writing by Jon stating he charged $2.50 per word\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Other examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-much-money-youtube-creators-influencers-earn-real-examples-2021-6\">Nate O\u2019Brien<\/a>, a YouTuber who earned ~$444,000 in a&nbsp;year.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/24\/business\/media\/new-model-celebrity.html\">Bill Bishop<\/a>, who\u2019s making six figures annually from Substack.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eofire.com\/income\/\">John Lee Dumas<\/a>, the podcaster making six figures a&nbsp;month(!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to become a successful content creator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back at my own career, I\u2019ve identified some key things that led me to become a content creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Choose a niche to develop your knowledge and skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To create content, you need to first have a topic. It can be anything: finance, football, or even Pokemon cards. In fact, I started off writing about breakdancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/3-breakdance-article.png\" alt=\"Title of SQ's article about breakdancing \"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I chose breakdancing because it was something I was already familiar with. I had been doing it for almost eight years at that point and had accumulated a ton of knowledge. I just needed to figure out how to share&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Content creation is ultimately not about <em>just<\/em>&nbsp;how beautiful your writing is or how magical your videos are. Of course, they play a part. But <strong>the core of content creation is about your ideas<\/strong>. If you don\u2019t have something to share\u2014or you don\u2019t have the required knowledge\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter how much time you spend refining your work. People just won\u2019t&nbsp;care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As bestselling finance author Morgan Housel puts&nbsp;it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">Good ideas are easy to write, bad ideas are hard. Difficulty is a quality signal, and writer\u2019s block usually indicates more about your ideas than your writing.<\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To become a successful content creator, you need to start with an area where you either have existing knowledge\/expertise or an area where you can develop knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s OK if you don\u2019t have expertise <strong>right now. <\/strong>On the contrary, it\u2019s a great way to begin. Document your journey and create content around how you\u2019re learning, practicing, and gaining knowledge. People love to follow stories of someone going from zero to&nbsp;one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, <strong>#buildinpublic<\/strong>&nbsp;is a popular hashtag on Twitter, and it has been a rallying point for many people who are creating content and learning in public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/threehourcoffee\/status\/1487716160850124803<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the niche you choose now is not something you\u2019re limited to forever. You can always change topics as you progress. I no longer create content about breakdancing and, instead, spend most of my time writing about marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the key point is this: You have to choose something to get started\u2014one that matches your strengths and the niche you\u2019re developing your expertise in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Choose a content creation skill you\u2019d like to develop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, you have to choose a content <strong>format<\/strong>&nbsp;and then develop skills in that area. Types of content creation skills include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Copywriting\/writing<\/li>\n<li>Graphic design<\/li>\n<li>Photography<\/li>\n<li>Video production<\/li>\n<li>Podcasting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if your niche is taekwondo, then perhaps you may want to consider developing your skills in video production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That being said, playing to your strengths is more important. Creating content is a long journey. And creating the type of content you like on a topic you\u2019re passionate about will help you go a long&nbsp;way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why, despite the fact that writing was (likely) a terrible medium for breakdancing, I still chose to go for copywriting in the end. The fact that I was already interested in writing\u2014coupled with me being camera shy\u2014made this decision a no-brainer. Create a \u201cDo 100\u201d project<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no way around it. If you want to learn how to create content, you <em>have <\/em>to create content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to improve your content creation skills, the best way is to actually make something and put it out there. Yes, it is scary. Yes, it will hurt to get feedback. But you have to go through this phase to become a successful content creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To tackle the above, I recommend creating a <strong>\u201cDo 100\u201d project<\/strong>. This is an idea that was popularized by my friend, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\">Visakan Veerasamy<\/a>. Basically, commit to making 100 of X, where X is the content creation skill you want to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here\u2019s the magic of Do 100 Thing: the first 20 might look like crap, and you might think you\u2019ll never get better if you do 1000, and then number 30 turns out better than you thought possible (h\/t <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shrinetothevine?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@shrinetothevine<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Kz8cISI5Yk\">pic.twitter.com\/Kz8cISI5Yk<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Visakan Veerasamy (@visakanv) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1447389798096728067?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 11,&nbsp;2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re trying to excel at making short-form videos, then commit to creating 100 TikTok videos. If you\u2019re writing, commit to crafting 100 tweets or writing 100 blog posts. If you\u2019re learning photography, post 100 photos on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason why this works is twofold:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Commitment<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;A project is a forcing hand. No more procrastination or constant deliberation. This is the reason why challenges like #tweet100 and #ship30for30 are so popular.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Volume <\/strong>\u2013 A ceramics teacher split his class into two groups: One was graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, the other on the quality of work. The result: The group graded for quantity produced works of higher quality. <a href=\"https:\/\/austinkleon.com\/2020\/12\/10\/quantity-leads-to-quality-the-origin-of-a-parable\/\">Quantity leads to quality<\/a>. The more you create, the better you become.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>My story is similar too. While I didn\u2019t call it a \u201cDo 100\u201d project back then, I committed to sending an email a day, five days a week, to the subscribers of my breakdance blog. I eventually wrote over a hundred emails. Looking back, I now realize this project really skyrocketed my writing skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/4-daily-emails.png\" alt=\"List of emails SQ wrote and sent \"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Get a job as a content creator<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After running my breakdance blog and working for an (eventually unsuccessful) startup, I was hired as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.referralcandy.com\/blog\/author\/siquano\/\">content marketing manager at ReferralCandy<\/a>. At ReferralCandy, a big part of my work was to create blog posts. But it wasn\u2019t simply any blog post. I had to create blog posts that were part of a content marketing strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of my work at ReferralCandy, I eventually joined Ahrefs\u2014and this is where I\u2019ve been for the past three&nbsp;years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to get a job to become a successful content creator. But I don\u2019t regret this path. After all, a content creator\u2019s job today is no longer just about content creation. It involves many parts of marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working at multiple companies has introduced me to important <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/marketing-skills\/\">marketing skills<\/a>&nbsp;like content marketing and SEO. It has also helped me to learn how to plan and create content as part of a coherent marketing strategy. With your \u201cDo 100\u201d project as your portfolio, you\u2019ll be in good standing to get one. Look through these <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/best-job-boards-for-marketers\/\">job boards<\/a>&nbsp;and see if you fit the jobs\u2019 criteria. Expand your horizons a little\u2014positions like \u201ccontent marketing manager\u201d or \u201ccontent strategist\u201d could be good matches too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking is important as well. I got my jobs at ReferralCandy and Ahrefs because I had met and befriended both the heads of marketing. Don\u2019t overcomplicate this. If you\u2019re learning from someone right now, reach out and thank them for their content. This is how you can kickstart a relationship with someone you admire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Furthering your career<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you progress along your career path and publish more, you\u2019ll begin to gain a reputation in your niche. You may even build a decent following along the&nbsp;way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re interested, you can consider branching out and playing with different projects. For example, you may want to freelance for other websites. If that\u2019s the path you\u2019re pursuing, I recommend reading this <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-freelancer\/\">post by Nick LeRoy<\/a>. While it\u2019s specifically about SEO freelancing, most of the principles can be applied to any form of freelancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other monetization opportunities too, besides freelancing. Ideas include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/podcast-advertising\/\">Product sponsorships<\/a>&nbsp;and advertising<\/li>\n<li>Speaking engagements<\/li>\n<li>Substack or other forms of subscriptions<\/li>\n<li>Online courses<\/li>\n<li>Books<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/affiliate-marketing\/\">Affiliate marketing<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ecommerce, e.g., setting up your own shop to sell merchandise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The world\u2019s your oyster. Play around and see which one matches your circumstance and context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a content creator, you never stop learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to stay up to date and learn about the changes in your chosen niche, as well as the platforms you\u2019re creating content for. You also need to stay current on what your audience wants to&nbsp;see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, as you learn more and more, you\u2019ll start to develop tastes and opinions. You\u2019ll begin to figure out what works and what doesn\u2019t.
