Plan: Benchmark your SEO performance and set a&nbsp;goal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The broad goal of creating an SEO strategy is to increase traffic. But a broad goal like this is far too vague to be useful. You need to attract the right kind of traffic, or it\u2019ll be worthless. I\u2019ll explain how to do that later. For now, know that if you have conversion tracking set up, it\u2019s fine to set a goal like \u201cincrease sales\u2026\u201d instead.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure what\u2019s achievable for you, consider how much traffic you already get. If it\u2019s millions of visits per month, you\u2019ll struggle to improve that by 50%+ in a few months. So, let\u2019s narrow down the list with a few filters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Filter for keywords with a low Keyword Difficulty (KD) score, like &lt;20<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" class=\"wp-image-175229\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/filtering-for-low-difficulty-keywords-1.png\" alt=\"Filtering for low-difficulty keywords\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filter for keywords with websites of similar authority to yours ranking in the top 5. You can use the \u201cLowest DR\u201d filter to do this. Just add 10 to your site\u2019s Domain Rating (DR), enter that number, and choose \u201cIn top 5\u201d. Press: Make optimizations to boost rankings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Low-hanging fruit keywords in hand, the next step is to press more juice out of them. This means figuring out why they\u2019re not ranking higher and re-optimizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, start with the easier things within your control. But people don\u2019t usually want to link to commercial content like sales pages. Let\u2019s call them \u201clinkers.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have your money&nbsp;pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because the vast majority of these people won\u2019t be linking to your money pages, you add a \u201cmiddleman\u201d \u2014a relevant blog post or informational resource.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The \u201cmiddleman\u201d (e.g., blog post) builds \u201cauthority,\u201d <strong>which can then be passed onto money pages using internal links.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The result? More powerful money pages that should help you rank and hopefully bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s go through how to do&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-178933-_7s8h9ap50oas\"><\/a>Step 1. Choose a \u201cmoney\u201d page to&nbsp;boost<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the easy part. The easiest way to do that is to exclude URLs containing \/blog\/ (or whatever subfolder you use for the bulk of your \u2018informational\u2019 content) using the exclude feature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"292\" class=\"wp-image-178937\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/exclude-informational-content-for-better-results.png\" alt=\"Exclude informational content for better results\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at this report for <em>ahrefs.com<\/em>, I can see that we rank #2 for \u201cdomain authority checker.\u201d This page is a tool and has reasonable business value for us, so it could use a rankings boost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-178933-_cgpd1cbvlodz\"><\/a>Step 2. Find relevant \u201cmiddleman\u201d opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve identified a page to boost, you need to find strong relevant \u201cmiddleman\u201d pages from which to add internal links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three ways to do&nbsp;this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-178933-_v5xj9amn99c6\"><\/a>Use Google + Ahrefs SEO Toolbar<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"post-178933-_vwvlfjmt5zv5\"><\/a>Head over to Google and search for: <code>site:yourwebsite.com + \u201ctopic of your \u2018money page'<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"post-178933-_vwvlfjmt5zv5\"><\/a>Change the website and keyword phrase as required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"post-178933-_vwvlfjmt5zv5\"><\/a>If we were looking for places from which to link to our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keyword-generator\">Keyword Generator<\/a> landing page, we\u2019d search for something like <code>site:ahrefs.com\/blog\/ + \u201ckeyword generator\u201d<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results are blog posts that mention the target phrase.
