Find keywords your target customers are searching for<\/h3>\n<p>You can\u2019t have an <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/orchard-seo-strategy\/\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-strategy\/\">SEO strategy<\/a>&nbsp;without knowing what your customers are searching for. Good keyword research&nbsp;is the difference between getting a positive ROI and wasting your time and money on rankings that don\u2019t net your business any profit.<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways to do keyword research. But the simplest starting point is to look at what your business competitors are ranking for. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Find competitors invested in&nbsp;SEO<\/li>\n<li>See what they\u2019re ranking for<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>First, think of \u201cseed keywords\u201d to get you started. These are keywords you think your customers may be searching for to find your products\/services or solutions.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you sell software that helps business owners create beautiful designs easily (like Canva&nbsp;does), here are some keywords you can start&nbsp;with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Photo editor<\/li>\n<li>Logo maker<\/li>\n<li>Graph maker<\/li>\n<li>GIF maker<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Think of the most basic words your customers may type in Google to find your offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve brainstormed a list of five to 10 seed keywords, plug those keywords into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>. Then click the \u201cBy domains\u201d tab under <strong>Traffic share<\/strong>. Put these search competitor URLs into a spreadsheet. Repeat for each seed keyword.<\/p>\n<p>Next, use Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-gap\">Content Gap tool<\/a>&nbsp;to find keywords your competitors are ranking for that you can also target. This will give you an idea of what kind of content is ranking for that keyword.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if we search \u201cdiscord logo\u201d from the list above, it appears this won\u2019t be a good keyword to target. Here\u2019s how to create a list on Ahrefs: On the \u201ckeyword overview\u201d page, click the \u201c+ Add to\u201d button, hover over \u201cKeywords&nbsp;list,\u201d then click \u201c+ New&nbsp;list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-138965\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-create-list.jpg\" alt=\"List of keywords \" width=\"886\" height=\"916\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-create-list.jpg 886w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-create-list-411x425.jpg 411w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-create-list-768x794.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 886px) 100vw, 886px\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p>I recommend creating three lists based on importance:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>High importance <\/strong>\u2013&nbsp;Keywords that are likely to earn you a high profit. Target these&nbsp;first.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low importance <\/strong>\u2013 Keywords that are not likely to earn you a good profit or will take longer to earn you a profit. But you may still want to target these in the future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Link building <\/strong>\u2013&nbsp;Keywords that receive a lot of natural links, such as statistical keywords or informational pages that other articles may link to as a resource.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The keyword \u201cdiscord logo,\u201d for example, is a low-importance keyword, as we aren\u2019t sure how many people searching for it are actually searching for a tool to make their own logo versus how many just want to download Discord\u2019s actual logo.<\/p>\n<p>Another way of determining the profit potential of a given keyword is the CPC column. <strong>A high CPC <\/strong><em><strong>can<\/strong><\/em><strong>&nbsp;signify there is a lot of money being made from a given keyword.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cDiscord logo\u201d only has a CPC of $0.70, so it\u2019s probably not very profitable.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> While a high CPC can signal potentially high-profit keywords, it shouldn\u2019t be the only determining factor. For example, the keyword \u201cseo services\u201d has a $25 CPC. But we won\u2019t target it for Ahrefs\u2019 website because Ahrefs doesn\u2019t offer SEO services.<\/div>\n<p>Before we move on to the next step, let\u2019s look at an example of a high-importance keyword and a link building keyword.<\/p>\n<p>The keyword \u201cfitness logo\u201d is potentially a high-importance keyword. It has a good search volume (4,700) and a fairly high CPC ($3.00).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-138976\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/9-fitness-logo-data.png\" alt=\"Keyword &quot;fitness logo&quot; and its data (search volume, CPC)\" width=\"1136\" height=\"78\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/9-fitness-logo-data.png 1136w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/9-fitness-logo-data-680x47.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/9-fitness-logo-data-768x53.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1136px) 100vw, 1136px\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p>If we look at the SERP, we\u2019ll see tools that let you design your own fitness business logo. Or were they looking for a particular website?<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t know the search intent of a keyword, you may end up optimizing a page for that keyword and not ranking for&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll go over the basics of how to determine search intent. Content type<\/h4>\n<p>The content type&nbsp;can be any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blog post<\/li>\n<li>Product page<\/li>\n<li>Category page<\/li>\n<li>Landing page<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the case of \u201cfitness logo,\u201d the search results are all landing pages. But if Google ranks pages that show examples of logos and logo designs that users can edit, we should take some inspiration from them. This is as if we create a page that is just text without logo examples, we may not rank for this keyword because it\u2019s not what searchers want to&nbsp;see.<\/p>\n<h4>2. Content format<\/h4>\n<p>The content format only applies to blog posts, so \u201cfitness logo\u201d won\u2019t need to be categorized. But to give you some ideas, these six formatting styles are the most common for a blog&nbsp;post:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How-to guide<\/li>\n<li>Step-by-step tutorial<\/li>\n<li>List post<\/li>\n<li>Opinion piece<\/li>\n<li>Review<\/li>\n<li>Comparison<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, for example, the keyword \u201cfont pairing\u201d that we discussed in Step 1 will be a list post because it lists 30 font pairings that go well together.<\/p>\n<h4>3. Content angle<\/h4>\n<p>The content angle is the unique selling point of the top-ranking posts and pages.
