And we\u2019re fully committed to establishing leadership on that&nbsp;front.<\/div>\n<p>Last year, we invested a lot of time and resources to take our keyword data to a whole new level. And we\u2019re quite happy with the results.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three major improvements that our customers will benefit from.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Vastly greater coverage (across all countries)<\/h2>\n<p>We&nbsp;now update our keyword database every month and add hundreds of millions of new keywords with each update.<\/p>\n<p>Just this month, we uploaded a whopping 7.2 billion keywords (yes, <em>billion<\/em>), increasing the total size of our database from 10.1 billion keywords to 17.3 billion keywords (~70% increase).<\/p>\n<p>Our coverage has vastly improved across many countries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>United States: +374 million (~9% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Brazil: +177 million (~26% increase)<\/li>\n<li>United Kingdom: +198 million (~40% increase)<\/li>\n<li>France: +108 million (~25% increase)<\/li>\n<li>India: +279 million (~156% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Germany: +174 million (~67% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Canada: +195 million (~113% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Spain: +110 million (~46% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Russian Federation: +147 million (~78% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Mexico: +136 million (~73% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Poland: +87 million (~38% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Italy: +98 million (~46% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Japan: +115 million (~65% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Indonesia: +192 million (~204% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Argentina: +103 million (~63% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Australia: +133 million (~106% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Philippines (the): +154 million (~206% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Colombia: +93 million (~69% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Turkey: +132 million (~161% increase)<\/li>\n<li>Vietnam: +156 million (~314% increase)<\/li>\n<li>etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the present moment, our U.S. database is actually the biggest one in the industry by far (to the best of our knowledge), comprising 4.4<strong>&nbsp;billion<\/strong>&nbsp;keywords.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_138731\" style=\"width: 1976px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138731\" class=\"size-full wp-image-138731\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/1-empty-search-keywords-explorer.png\" alt=\"Empty search in Keywords Explorer\" width=\"1966\" height=\"806\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/1-empty-search-keywords-explorer.png 1966w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/1-empty-search-keywords-explorer-680x279.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/1-empty-search-keywords-explorer-768x315.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/1-empty-search-keywords-explorer-1536x630.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1966px) 100vw, 1966px\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-138731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An empty search in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>&nbsp;gives you access to our entire keyword database (in the selected country).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As a result, you\u2019ll usually find more keyword ideas in Ahrefs than in any other keyword research tool.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when I used Ahrefs and SEMrush to generate keyword ideas from 10 random \u201cseeds\u201d with varying popularity, Ahrefs found 50% more keyword ideas on average.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_138732\" style=\"width: 694px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138732\" class=\"size-full wp-image-138732\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/2-ahrefs-vs-semrush-1.jpg\" alt=\"Table showing list of &quot;seeds&quot; with corresponding no. of keyword ideas Ahrefs and SEMrush found, respectively\" width=\"684\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/2-ahrefs-vs-semrush-1.jpg 684w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/2-ahrefs-vs-semrush-1-515x425.jpg 515w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-138732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I also had to exclude outliers like \u201ccovid\u201d or \u201cNFT,\u201d where Ahrefs showed 64X and 24X more keyword ideas, respectively.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is hardly surprising. According to the official numbers, our U.S. database (4.4 billion) is almost twice bigger than SEMrush\u2019s (2.6 billion).<\/p>\n<h2>2. More accurate search volume<\/h2>\n<p>We worked hard to refine our search volume numbers by blending data from multiple sources and finding the right balance between them.&nbsp;We\u2019ve also started showing the monthly search volume values for each keyword, with an option to export them into&nbsp;CSV.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-138733\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/3-keyword-overview-marketing.png\" alt=\"Overview of keyword &quot;marketing&quot; \" width=\"1644\" height=\"950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/3-keyword-overview-marketing.png 1644w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/3-keyword-overview-marketing-680x393.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/3-keyword-overview-marketing-768x444.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/3-keyword-overview-marketing-1536x888.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1644px) 100vw, 1644px\"><\/p>\n<p>But how accurate are the search volumes in Ahrefs?<\/p>\n<p>Well, we recently performed <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/gsc-gkp-search-volume-study\/\">a study of 72,635 random keywords<\/a>&nbsp;comparing the search volumes from three sources: Ahrefs, Google Keyword Planner, and Google Search Console.<\/p>\n<p>And it turned out that <strong>the search volumes in Ahrefs are more accurate than search volumes in Google Keyword Planner<\/strong>&nbsp;(when compared to \u201cImpressions\u201d from Google Search Console)<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-138617\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/4-keyword-search-volume-accuracy.png\" alt=\"Bar chart showing Ahrefs is more accurate than GKP\" width=\"1589\" height=\"1600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/4-keyword-search-volume-accuracy.png 1589w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/4-keyword-search-volume-accuracy-422x425.png 422w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/4-keyword-search-volume-accuracy-768x773.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/4-keyword-search-volume-accuracy-1525x1536.png 1525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1589px) 100vw, 1589px\"><\/p>\n<p>One of the main reasons why Ahrefs has better search volumes than <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-keyword-planner\/\">Google Keyword Planner<\/a> is the latter is known for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesempost.com\/googles-keyword-planner-now-combines-keywords-for-search-volume\/\">grouping search queries with similar meaning<\/a>&nbsp;and showing an aggregated search volume for the entire group.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the following search queries don\u2019t have distinct search volumes in Google Keyword Planner:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>comparing vpns<\/li>\n<li>compare vpn<\/li>\n<li>comparison vpn<\/li>\n<li>compare vpns<\/li>\n<li>vpns compared<\/li>\n<li>vpn compare<\/li>\n<li>vpn comparison<\/li>\n<li>vpn comparisons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-138734\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/5-compare-vpn-variations-1.jpg\" alt=\"Variations of &quot;compare vpn&quot; grouped together \" width=\"1286\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/5-compare-vpn-variations-1.jpg 1286w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/5-compare-vpn-variations-1-680x179.jpg 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/5-compare-vpn-variations-1-768x202.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1286px) 100vw, 1286px\"><\/p>\n<p>And this \u201cgrouping\u201d issue is then being picked up by every SEO tool that relies on Google Keyword Planner as its main source of search volume data.<\/p>\n<p>But here at Ahrefs, we have developed a unique algorithm for modeling keyword search volumes that blends data from multiple sources (including clickstream). This allows us to \u201cun-group\u201d keyword clusters from Google Keyword Planner and display a search volume for each keyword:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-141017\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ahrefs-vs-google-keyword-planner-data.jpg\" alt width=\"1684\" height=\"1176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ahrefs-vs-google-keyword-planner-data.jpg 1684w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ahrefs-vs-google-keyword-planner-data-609x425.jpg 609w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ahrefs-vs-google-keyword-planner-data-768x536.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ahrefs-vs-google-keyword-planner-data-1536x1073.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1684px) 100vw, 1684px\"><\/p>\n<p>Seeing the distinct search volumes for close keyword variations prevents you from accidentally overestimating a topic\u2019s total search traffic potential when summing the search volumes of all keywords in a group (also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keyword_clustering\">keyword clustering<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Other than that, knowing the most popular ways people search for something can help you adjust the language of your page accordingly and come up with a more eye-catching page&nbsp;title.<\/p>\n<h2>3. New metric: Traffic Potential<\/h2>\n<p>Despite investing a considerable amount of effort into refining our search volume estimations, there\u2019s still one big issue related to this metric that we have to address:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/also-rank-for-study\/\">Pages don\u2019t rank for a single keyword!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And it is a mistake to estimate the search traffic potential of your page based on the search volume of a single keyword.<\/p>\n<p>Top SEO professionals realized this a long time&nbsp;ago:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Better than search volume: average traffic of the first three results.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kevin_Indig (@Kevin_Indig) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kevin_Indig\/status\/1283024362237497344?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 14,&nbsp;2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A better way to estimate search traffic potential is to see how much search traffic the top-ranking pages get in total from all the keywords they rank&nbsp;for.<\/p>\n<p>This simple workflow inspired us to add a brand-new metric to Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>: <strong>Traffic Potential<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This metric shows how much search traffic the top-ranking page for a keyword gets in total from all the keywords it ranks&nbsp;for.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see it in action:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-138619\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/7-keyword-overview-submit-website-to-search-engines.jpg\" alt=\"Overview for keyword \u201csubmit website to search engines\u201d\" width=\"1600\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/7-keyword-overview-submit-website-to-search-engines.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/7-keyword-overview-submit-website-to-search-engines-680x283.jpg 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/7-keyword-overview-submit-website-to-search-engines-768x320.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/7-keyword-overview-submit-website-to-search-engines-1536x639.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p>The keyword <em>\u201c<\/em>submit website to search engines\u201d has a pretty small monthly search volume of 450 in the U.S., but its <strong>Traffic Potential<\/strong>&nbsp;is 4.6K.<\/p>\n<p>That happens because there are hundreds of very similar search queries that people use to search for that same thing. And the #1 ranking page for \u201csubmit website to search engines\u201d&nbsp;is ranking well and getting clicks from all of&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n<p>Now if we look at a keyword like \u201clocal SEO,\u201d we see the opposite. Its search volume is nearly 20X higher than the previous keyword, but its <strong>Traffic Potential <\/strong>is roughly twice lower than that of the previous keyword.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-138735\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-keyword-overview-local-seo.png\" alt=\"Overview for keyword &quot;local seo&quot;\" width=\"2474\" height=\"961\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-keyword-overview-local-seo.png 2474w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-keyword-overview-local-seo-680x264.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-keyword-overview-local-seo-768x298.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-keyword-overview-local-seo-1536x597.png 1536w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/8-keyword-overview-local-seo-2048x796.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2474px) 100vw, 2474px\"><\/p>\n<p>This is simply because there aren\u2019t that many other ways to search for this topic. So despite the popularity of the main search query, the actual <strong>Traffic Potential<\/strong>&nbsp;doesn\u2019t really live up to&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, these two examples are enough to illustrate how our <strong>Traffic Potential <\/strong>metric will help you make better decisions as you prioritize keyword ideas.<\/p>\n<p>And we got a ton of positive feedback when we announced this metric on Twitter:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We have finally released this long overdue SEO metric:<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd25 Traffic potential&nbsp;\ud83d\udd25<\/p>\n<p>Because pages don\u2019t rank in Google for just a single keyword. But since then, we have diversified our data sources and established new partnerships with a number of reliable SEO data providers, allowing us to overcome this setback.<\/p>\n<p>So today, we\u2019re happy to announce that Ahrefs\u2019 keyword data is in its best shape ever!
