Once claimed, the information you add to your business profile can show up in Google\u2019s web search results and in Google Maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can claim your business profile through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/intl\/en_uk\/business\/\">Google My Business<\/a>, Google\u2019s free tool for managing your Google My Business profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/intl\/en_uk\/business\/\">Google My Business<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Manage now<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sign in to your Google Account<\/li>\n<li>Search for your business name<\/li>\n<li>Select the correct business<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Manage now<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> If your business doesn\u2019t show up in searches, hit the option to add your business and follow the instructions. Even if your business does show up, you may be asked to review and confirm your business details before step #6. <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After claiming, you\u2019ll be able to manage your business profile using Google My Business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1-google-my-business.jpg\" alt=\"Google Business Profile\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are lots of details and optimizations you can make here. So in the interest of keeping things simple, let\u2019s take a look at, arguably, the five most important optimizations you should make:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Choose the right business type<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013 <\/strong>Google divides businesses into <em>storefront<\/em>, <em>service-area,<\/em>&nbsp;and <em>hybrid<\/em>&nbsp;businesses. The information you enter on the \u201cInfo\u201d tab defines how Google sees your business. If your&nbsp;business serves customers at your business address only, as is the case for a hairdresser or cafe, set your address and leave the service area field empty. If your business only visits or delivers to customers, as is the case for a plumber or mobile hairdresser, clear the address and set your service area(s). If your business does both, add your address and set your service area(s).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose the right business category<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013 <\/strong>You have lots of options here, and some of them are similar (e.g., accountant vs. chartered accountant). Take a minute to sift through the options and choose the most appropriate one for&nbsp;you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add business hours<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;People won\u2019t visit or call your business if they think you\u2019re closed, so it\u2019s crucial to list accurate business hours. If you know your industry and customers well, then it\u2019s likely you have some idea how they do this. But it\u2019s still wise to perform keyword research to expand your&nbsp;scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019re a plumber in London. You probably don\u2019t need to do keyword research to know that potential customers are searching for things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>plumber in london<\/li>\n<li>plumber<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But the reality is that people are probably also searching for what you do in other ways. By focusing only on obvious keywords like \u201cplumber london,\u201d you\u2019re leaving a lot of money on the&nbsp;table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s one way to figure out other ways people may be searching for&nbsp;you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Brainstorm your products or services<\/li>\n<li>Paste your list into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Go to the <strong>Matching terms<\/strong>&nbsp;report<\/li>\n<li>Look for relevant keywords with search volume<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if we plug services like \u201cboiler repair,\u201d \u201cboiler installation,\u201d and \u201cdrain unblocking\u201d into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>, we see that people are searching for these and similar services every&nbsp;month:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-matching-terms-report-boilers-and-drain.png\" alt=\"Keyword ideas in Keywords Explorer\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the search volumes in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a> are national, not local. In other words, they show the estimated monthly number of searches in your chosen country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, that\u2019s not a huge deal because people typically search for things in the same way from city to city. Optimize local landing pages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve found that people are searching for the specific products or services you offer, you probably need to create <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/location-pages\/\">dedicated location landing pages<\/a> for&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, people aren\u2019t only searching for \u201cplumber\u201d but&nbsp;also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>gas boiler installation<\/li>\n<li>boiler replacement<\/li>\n<li>bathroom fitting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes sense to have landing pages for these services. But how do you get them to rank higher in searches?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s first tackle the wrong way to go about this: keyword stuffing. This is where you repeat the keywords you want to rank for as many times as possible on the page, leading to quite unnatural copy like&nbsp;this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-keyword-stuffing-example.jpg\" alt=\"Keyword stuffing\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You still see this a lot on local business websites, and it\u2019s never a good idea. It doesn\u2019t help SEO and likely only serves to alienate potential customers even if it&nbsp;did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, you should \u201coptimize\u201d landing pages by including information that matters to searchers. Much of this is common sense. For example, it\u2019s quite obvious that folks searching for \u201cboiler repair\u201d will want pricing information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even if you know your industry and customers well, you can overlook important details. For that reason, it\u2019s useful to look at what other similar pages are ranking for, as these keywords often relate to important details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to do&nbsp;that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Install and activate Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo-toolbar\">SEO Toolbar<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Search Google for the service\/product name + location<\/li>\n<li>Look for a similar page to yours in the search results (this means a service page from another local business)<\/li>\n<li>Check that it ranks for a decent number of keywords<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>KW<\/strong>&nbsp;link<\/li>\n<li>Filter for top 10 rankings<\/li>\n<li>Filter out sitelink and \u201cpeople also ask\u201d rankings<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if we search for \u201cboiler repair london,\u201d we see this service page that ranks for 232 keywords:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4-google-search-boiler-repair-london.png\" alt=\"Number of keywords a page ranks for\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If we click that number, we see all those keywords in Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/5-organic-keywords-report-plumbforcedirect.png\" alt=\"Keyword rankings in Site Explorer\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> We\u2019re only seeing 173 keywords, not 232, because we\u2019re only looking at keyword rankings in the U.K. The other keyword rankings were observed elsewhere.&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As we\u2019re only interested in the most relevant keywords, let\u2019s also filter for keywords in the top 10 and exclude sitelink and \u201cpeople also ask\u201d rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/6-organic-keywords-position-and-serp-filters.jpg\" alt=\"Filtering for keywords in Site Explorer\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The noteworthy keywords (highlighted in the screenshot above) are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>fixed price boiler repairs<\/li>\n<li>emergency boiler repair london<\/li>\n<li>boiler call&nbsp;out<\/li>\n<li>electric boiler repair<\/li>\n<li>gas boiler repair near&nbsp;me<\/li>\n<li>boiler repair same&nbsp;day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From these keywords, we can see that searchers are probably looking for repairers who offer fixed pricing rather than hourly pricing. Get local citations and&nbsp;links<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Local citations are mentions of your business\u2019s name, address, and phone number (NAP) online. They were voted the fifth most important ranking factor for local queries in <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/local-search-ranking-factors\">Moz\u2019s 2018 study<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re likely a bit less important these days, but they\u2019re still worth getting for two reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>They help people find your business<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;Local SEO is not just about optimizing for Google, but also other search engines people may use to find your business, such as Yelp, Bing, Facebook, Apple Maps, and any industry-specific directories.<\/li>\n<li><strong>They may still help you to rank<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;Even though they\u2019re less important than they once were, they may still help you to&nbsp;rank.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in the U.S., the best place to start with local citations is the three main U.S. aggregators:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.data-axle.com\/\">Data Axle<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neustarlocaleze.biz\/\">Localeze<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/foursquare.com\/\">Foursquare<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These services feed their data to many other websites and directories, so getting citations on these services can often lead to citations elsewhere without any extra&nbsp;work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also want to pursue these other major players:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bing<\/li>\n<li>Apple Maps<\/li>\n<li>Facebook<\/li>\n<li>Yelp<\/li>\n<li>Yellowpages<\/li>\n<li>Dunn &amp; Bradstreet<\/li>\n<li>TomTom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond this, it\u2019s mostly worth concentrating on industry or location-specific citations. In other words, listings on local or industry-specific directories and search engines. Reclaim lost&nbsp;links<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-are-backlinks\/\">Backlinks<\/a> are a known Google ranking factor, but they can be difficult to build. So it\u2019s important to ensure that none of the links you already have go to waste. You can do this by reclaiming links to pages on your site that no longer exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enter your domain into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Go to the <strong>Best by links<\/strong>&nbsp;report<\/li>\n<li>Add a \u201c404 not found\u201d HTTP filter<\/li>\n<li>Redirect those URLs to their new locations<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if we do this for a plumber in New York, we see a dead page about drain cleaning with backlinks from three referring domains (unique websites).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/8-best-by-links-404-filter.png\" alt=\"404 page with backlinks in Site Explorer\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These backlinks are effectively wasted because the page is broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quick click around their site reveals the problem: They moved the \u201cdrain cleaning services\u201d page to a new URL and forgot to redirect the old&nbsp;URL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/9-hub-plumbing-url-slug.png\" alt=\"New URL for dead page\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To reclaim these links, all the owner of the site needs to do is redirect the old URL to the new one. Get more reviews<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Google says that \u201chigh-quality, positive reviews from your customers can improve your business visibility,\u201d and they\u2019re the second most important map pack ranking factor, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightlocal.com\/learn\/key-ranking-factors-for-local-seo\/\">BrightLocal\u2019s 2020 study<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you get more reviews? Just&nbsp;ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to be a little careful with this because it\u2019s against Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/3474122?hl=en-GB\">terms<\/a> to offer incentives to customers in exchange for reviews. But there are ways to increase the likelihood of a customer leaving a review without breaking Google\u2019s terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I recently had my old car cleaned and valeted. When the guy was finished, he sent me a bunch of \u201cbefore\u201d and \u201cafter\u201d photos of my car on Facebook:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/10-joshua-old-car.png\" alt=\"Photos in a Facebook message\" width=\"500px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He didn\u2019t actually ask for a review. But because the photos he took made it easier for me to leave a useful one, I&nbsp;did:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/11-google-review-skippys.jpg\" alt=\"Google review I left\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Judging by the number of photos on the other reviews, it looks like this approach worked well with other customers too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there\u2019s one way this guy could (probably) get even more reviews\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026 by creating and sharing a link that customers can use to leave a review, which you can do for free in Google My Business. Just click the \u201cShare review form\u201d button in the management dashboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/12-share-review-form.png\" alt=\"Button to share Google review form\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a best practice, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/3474122?hl=en-GB\">according to Google<\/a>. Take this list of the best places to eat chicken wings in Manchester, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/13-best-places-for-chicken-wings.png\" alt=\"Example of a best of list\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of variations of \u201cbest of\u201d lists too, such as this list of the top 10 child-friendly wine estates in Cape&nbsp;Town:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/14-child-friendly-wine-farms.png\" alt=\"Example of a best of list\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Children and wine; the mind boggles. But I digress\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting your business featured on relevant lists like this is a good idea for two main reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It gets more customers through the door<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;These listicles usually rank high for terms like \u201cbest __ in ___.\u201d &nbsp;If you\u2019re on 9 out of 10 lists, they\u2019re likely to try&nbsp;you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It gets you backlinks<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;And we already know that backlinks help you to rank higher in Google.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to find relevant local lists to&nbsp;pitch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Install Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo-toolbar\">SEO Toolbar <\/a><\/li>\n<li>Search Google for something that\u2019s likely to return relevant lists for your business<\/li>\n<li>Look for blog posts with traffic<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you run a boutique hotel in London, you might search for \u201cbest boutique hotels london.\u201d This gives you a mix of directories (which you can ignore) and blog posts.
