In fact, we\u2019d like to think we\u2019re more than decent at it. SEO-driven content marketing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many other SaaS companies, we regularly create content on both our blog and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/AhrefsCom\">YouTube channel<\/a>. But in a crowded world, simply producing content isn\u2019t enough. It needs to be <strong>discovered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cdiscovery engine\u201d behind our content is <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-is-seo\/\">search engine optimization (SEO)<\/a>. This is how our blog gets ~300K monthly visitors from Google alone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1-ahrefs-blog-traffic.png\" alt=\"Data on Ahrefs blog's monthly organic traffic\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>SEO-driven content marketing is the core of our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/marketing-strategy\/\">marketing strategy<\/a>. It drives both our business and other marketing channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how we do&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A. Find topics with search traffic potential<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For a piece of content to get search traffic, it has to be about a topic that people are actively searching for on Google. Makes sense, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to find these topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Enter a keyword related to your industry (e.g., \u201cdesign\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the <strong>Matching terms<\/strong>&nbsp;report<\/li>\n<li>Toggle the <strong>Questions<\/strong>&nbsp;tab<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll see tons of keyword ideas and their estimated monthly search volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-matching-terms.jpg\" alt=\"Matching terms report of monthly search volumes\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for topics to rank for on YouTube, then simply change the search engine from <strong>Google<\/strong>&nbsp;to <strong>YouTube<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-matching-terms-youtube.jpg\" alt=\"The word &quot;Youtube&quot; added in the search box in Keyword Explorer \"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Look through these topics and note down those that are relevant to your&nbsp;SaaS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommended reading:<\/strong>&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/keyword-research\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-research\/\">Keyword Research: The Beginner\u2019s Guide by Ahrefs<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">B.&nbsp;Focus on high \u201cbusiness potential\u201d topics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One unique thing we do at Ahrefs is to pitch our product in every piece of content we create. We want you to learn how to solve a problem and know how our toolset helps to solve it&nbsp;too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, many SaaS companies avoid doing this due to the fear of being too <em>sales-y<\/em>. But we\u2019d like to think we straddle the line pretty well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One key reason why we\u2019ve managed to do this successfully is thanks to a score we\u2019ve created called \u201cbusiness potential\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4-business-potential.png\" alt=\"Table with scores 3 to 0. And explanation of criteria to meet each score.\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Writing about topics with a high \u201cbusiness potential\u201d score allows us to promote our product naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the topic \u201clink building\u201d is a \u201c3\u201d in our books. That\u2019s because it\u2019s almost impossible to do link building well without a backlink research tool\u2014something we offer. Data studies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every piece of content we create is designed to rank in Google. In fact, we have plenty of articles like <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-traffic-study\/\">this<\/a>&nbsp;that get almost no organic traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/6-content-study-traffic.png\" alt=\"Data of Ahrefs article that gets very little organic traffic\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Why do we still create them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These articles are mostly data studies, and there are three main reasons why we create them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Thought leadership<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013 <\/strong>These studies educate, inform, and enlighten people in our industry on how things are (or where they\u2019re heading).&nbsp;They lend numbers and credibility for what marketers want to do\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/justifying-seo\/\">convince their bosses to invest in SEO<\/a>, show <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/enterprise-seo\/\">stakeholders where to direct resources<\/a>, etc. This, in turn, makes us top of&nbsp;mind.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Show off our data<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;The core of our product is <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/big-data\">data<\/a>. These studies help \u201cflex\u201d our data muscles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Linkbait \u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;These studies usually attract tons of links as other publications quote&nbsp;them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how you can do&nbsp;it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A. Find an interesting topic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t just create any data study and expect publicity. It needs to be interesting\u2014or at least interesting to people who may cite them (e.g., journalists).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to find interesting data is to find topics that people are already talking about <em>subjectively<\/em>&nbsp;and create <em>objective data<\/em>&nbsp;to address them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a popular question in the SEO industry is, \u201cHow long does it take to rank in Google?\u201d And almost every blog post that tried to answer this question based the reply on subjective experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/7-subjective-experience.png\" alt=\"Excerpt from blog post giving a subjective answer\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in 2017, we <a href=\"\/blog\/how-long-does-it-take-to-rank-in-google-and-how-old-are-top-ranking-pages\/\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-long-does-it-take-to-rank\/\">conducted a study<\/a>&nbsp;using our data to answer the question. It remains one of our most popular data studies and has since generated a total of 3,200 backlinks from ~1,500 unique websites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/8-how-long-does-it-take-to-rank-traffic.png\" alt=\"Data showing Ahrefs' study getting tons of backlinks and referring domains\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Another tactic is reconducting popular but outdated studies. Here\u2019s how you can find these studies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Enter a search term like [industry] + \u201cstudy,\u201d [industry] + \u201csurvey,\u201d [industry] + \u201cresearch,\u201d or [industry] + \u201cdata\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Set the filter to an \u201cintitle\u201d search<\/li>\n<li>Set the <strong>Published<\/strong>&nbsp;filter to an older date range (e.g., 2010-2015)<\/li>\n<li>Sort the results by <strong>referring domains<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, doing this for the SEO industry surfaces a few studies we can recreate that already have thousands of&nbsp;links:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/9-content-explorer.jpg\" alt=\"List of studies that have thousands of links\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">B. Promote your content to interested parties<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The beauty of the two tactics above is that you already know who\u2019s writing about these topics. All that\u2019s left is to reach out and introduce your study to them. Find relevant tools that people are searching for<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like content, tools need to be discovered. Create a free&nbsp;tool<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Quite likely, all you need to do is to take one of your existing functionalities and create a limited version of it. This is exactly what we do for all of our free tools. Content repurposing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re spending lots of resources <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-creation\/\">creating content<\/a>, it will be a waste just to publish and forget. Instead, make every piece go the extra mile. Turn it into multiple formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do this all the time at Ahrefs. Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My colleague, Michal Pec\u00e1nek, turned his <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/bounce-rate\/\">blog post on bounce rate<\/a>&nbsp;into a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michalpecanek\/status\/1334065819354075140\">popular Twitter thread<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The SEO checklist image from <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-checklist\/\">our post<\/a>&nbsp;went viral on both <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ahrefs\/status\/1426963210528247822\">Twitter<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6833445406794489856\">LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>We repurposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9HWna4hK47c\">our video on content republishing<\/a>&nbsp;into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/republishing-content\/\">an article<\/a>&nbsp;(and both now rank #1 on their respective platforms).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of it as a pyramid. Be a guest on podcasts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Podcasting has exploded in popularity. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of podcasts in any industry. And plenty need guests to come on and share their knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This presents a great opportunity for any SaaS business to promote itself and tap into the podcast\u2019s audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you find these opportunities? Here\u2019s what to&nbsp;do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A. Find podcasts to appear on<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The easiest way to find podcast opportunities is to search Google for \u201cbest [industry] podcasts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/17-best-podcasts-google-search.jpg\" alt=\"Google search results of &quot;best ux products&quot;\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can find a prolific podcaster in your industry and look for podcasts where they\u2019ve been a guest. Paid&nbsp;ads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Paid advertising is relatively straightforward: pay a platform (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-drive-traffic-to-your-website\/\">drive traffic to your website<\/a>. Plenty of SaaS companies do this because it is direct, measurable, and easy to&nbsp;scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, we use paid ads at Ahrefs too. But with a twist. We use paid advertising to <strong>promote our content<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Well, a few reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Most people don\u2019t sign up for software after seeing an ad.<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s just not how the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/buyers-journey\/\">buyer\u2019s journey<\/a>&nbsp;works, and we\u2019re aware of&nbsp;that.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We pitch our product in all the content we produce (tactic #1).<\/strong>&nbsp;So each article basically acts as a sales page. Seen from that lens, we\u2019re actually driving traffic to an \u201ceducational sales&nbsp;page.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Content needs to be discovered in order for any next step to take place.<\/strong>&nbsp;If no one\u2019s reading your content, then they cannot be educated, link to you, or consume your \u201csales pitch.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That is not to say we don\u2019t use paid advertising to get sign-ups. We do. But we only use it for our free tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/webmaster-tools\">Ahrefs Webmaster Tools<\/a>. And they get us sign-ups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/19-conference-registration.png\" alt=\"Written reply of someone who learned about Ahrefs through an event in Bali\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Events, like podcasts, are aplenty. You can always find one to share your expertise at. They don\u2019t have to be a 10K-person event; small, local meetups work well&nbsp;too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If in-person events are not possible, you can always look out for virtual conferences and summits. So is your business. But that doesn\u2019t mean you can simply \u201ccopy-paste\u201d our tactics and achieve overnight success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, your target customers, industry, pricing, etc., are all different from&nbsp;us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do you decide which tactics you should use for your&nbsp;SaaS?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assuming you already know who your target customers are (most important step!), I think you\u2019ll like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarketingstudent.com\/go-to-market\/\">this mental model<\/a> from David Fallame, marketing director at <a href=\"https:\/\/beondeck.com\/\">On Deck<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/20-acquisition-strategy.png\" alt=\"Mental model of five animals and the corresponding acquisition strategy \"><\/p>\n\n<p>In this metaphor, you need to&nbsp;know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which \u201canimal\u201d you\u2019re going&nbsp;after.<\/li>\n<li>Which \u201chunting tool\u201d you should use.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>first step<\/strong>&nbsp;is to identify your business model. What kind of customers (\u201canimal\u201d) does your SaaS&nbsp;need?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Elephants<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong> Worth hundreds of thousands of dollars per&nbsp;year<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antelopes \u2013<\/strong> Worth tens of thousands of dollars per&nbsp;year<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rabbits \u2013<\/strong> Worth thousands of dollars per&nbsp;year<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mice<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong> Worth hundreds of dollars per&nbsp;year<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flies<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong> Worth a few dollars per&nbsp;year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Next,<\/strong>&nbsp;identify the right \u201chunting tool,\u201d aka your acquisition strategy. There are three main&nbsp;types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Spears \u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;Require lots of direct human skill and involvement, like sales and business development. For SaaS businesses that target enterprise customers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nets \u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;Pull in a large number of potential targets at once, like <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-marketing\/\">content marketing<\/a>. For SaaS businesses that target small businesses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seeds \u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;Your customer base grows on its own. Examples are word of mouth and virality. For SaaS businesses that target small businesses or consumers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For us, our customer base is mainly between the $1K-$10K zone. That is why our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-marketing-strategy\/\">content marketing strategy<\/a>&nbsp;works wonders\u2014it is the right tool for the right&nbsp;group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Working in SaaS means hearing the quote <em>\u201cgood artists copy, great artists steal\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll admit: It\u2019s decent advice. After all, most art is simply a remix of what came before. But I think this advice is taken too far at times. For example, take a look at the homepages of many SaaS companies. They look nearly the&nbsp;same.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I guess there\u2019s a new trend in SaaS homepage design \ud83d\ude06 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5qhQOCVBi5\">pic.twitter.com\/5qhQOCVBi5<\/a><\/p>\n\u2014 Tim Soulo (@timsoulo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timsoulo\/status\/1149600136932184064?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 12,&nbsp;2019<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n<p>Marketing is about <strong>differentiating yourself from your competitors<\/strong>. But ironically, by copying each other, everyone ends up looking the&nbsp;same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with copying or following best practices. But always add your own twist. This is how we\u2019ve always done our marketing at Ahrefs.
