If you do see another landing page in the top positions, that is a strong indicator that you can rank as&nbsp;well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main tactics to find good landing page keywords:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">a. Uncover competitors\u2019 landing pages with traffic<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Use Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a> to analyze your competitors. Specifically, we will use the <strong>Top Pages 2.0<\/strong> report to see the best-performing pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to pick your target country (e.g., United States). Then set a rule to exclude branded keywords. In this example, we are excluding Asana:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2-exclude-keyword-filter.png\" alt=\"Filtering for keywords that don't contain the word 'asana'\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Now you can review which of your competitors\u2019 pages drive the most organic traffic. You can see that Asana is getting traffic to two landing pages. The top keywords are \u201ctask management\u201d and \u201cproject management tools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/3-competitors-top-pages-report.jpg\" alt=\"Landing pages with traffic in the Top Pages report\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>For an Asana competitor, these would potentially be good keywords to target too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rinse and repeat the process with other competitors until you have written down a list of potential opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">b. Find more keywords with a keyword research tool<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use your list of keywords from the previous step to inspire your <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/keyword-research\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-research\/\">keyword research<\/a>. We will use Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a> for this. Enter your ideas as seed keywords, and then go to the <strong>Matching terms <\/strong>report to get more&nbsp;ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/4-keyword-explorer-matching-terms-report.png\" alt=\"Keyword ideas in Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Here are just a few of the keyword ideas we get from the seed keywords \u201cproject management\u201d and \u201ctask management\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Agile project management tools<\/li>\n<li>Project portfolio management tools<\/li>\n<li>Online task management<\/li>\n<li>Personal task management<\/li>\n<li>Task management software for&nbsp;teams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For keywords that look like potential candidates for a landing page, it\u2019s important to click the \u201cSERP\u201d button and check the top-ranking pages. Check ranking difficulty and traffic potential<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before finalizing your target keywords, you need to account for two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traffic potential<\/li>\n<li>Ranking difficulty<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traffic potential<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ranking for keywords with little or no traffic potential is pointless because they won\u2019t send any meaningful organic traffic your way\u2014even if you rank for them. That said, as landing pages tend to be quite lucrative, you can usually afford to target keywords with lower traffic potential than you may consider for, say, a blog&nbsp;post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguably, the easiest way to judge traffic potential is to see how much search traffic the current top-ranking landing page for the keyword gets, which you can do in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the top-ranking landing page for \u201ctask management\u201d gets an estimated 3,813 monthly search visits:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/6-serp-overview-task-management.jpg\" alt=\"Asana's landing page ranking for task management\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">pro tip<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s usually best to exclude homepage landing pages when doing this, as they are often outliers that attract search traffic from many other keywords. A good example of this is the top-ranking landing page for \u201cconstruction project management,\u201d which gets an estimated 17K organic visits per&nbsp;month:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/7-serp-overview-construction-project-management.jpg\" alt=\"Example of a homepage landing page with lots of traffic in the SERP\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1372\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>However, as you can see from the number of backlinks this page has and the number of keywords it ranks for, its traffic probably isn\u2019t an accurate representation of this keyword\u2019s traffic potential as a&nbsp;whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The cutoff point for traffic potential is up to you. One company may be willing to make a significant effort to rank a landing page that gets them just a couple of hundred search visits per month, whereas another may not. It all depends on how much you think that traffic will be worth for&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ranking difficulty<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no point in targeting a keyword if it\u2019s going to be virtually impossible to rank for in the short-to-medium term. You will be stuck on Page 4 forever and burn through your SEO resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quickest way to get a rough sense of ranking difficulty is with Ahrefs\u2019 Keyword Difficulty score. You\u2019ll see this for all keywords in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>, and it essentially grades relative ranking difficulty on a scale from 0-100 (lower = easier):<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/8-keyword-explorer-resuts.png\" alt=\"Keyword Difficulty scores\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>However, the only factor this score takes into account is backlinks. So before you make the decision to target a keyword, it\u2019s worth checking the SERP manually and asking yourself three questions for a more accurate sense of ranking difficulty:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Do the websites with landing pages have a similar Domain Rating (DR) score to my website<\/strong>? If their DR is much higher than yours, then you may find it harder to rank. Ideally, you should be roughly on&nbsp;par.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do the landing pages have many or a few referring domains?<\/strong>&nbsp;You\u2019re probably going to need roughly the same number of linking websites or more to compete with the landing pages in the SERP, so what you\u2019re trying to gauge here is whether acquiring links from that many websites is likely to be manageable for&nbsp;you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do the landing pages have high-quality backlinks? <\/strong>You may see a landing page with tons of backlinks. But if most of these are low quality or spammy, they\u2019ll likely be easy to beat with few <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/high-quality-backlinks\/\">high-quality backlinks<\/a>. So it\u2019s worth taking a quick look at their link profile in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>&nbsp;before making your decision.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, there\u2019s no way to know for sure whether you\u2019ll find ranking for a keyword easy or difficult, but assessing these factors helps. For this, you will want to review the top-performing landing pages that you spotted in the previous steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two dimensions that you want to analyze:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What do these landing pages talk about?<\/strong>&nbsp;You will want to learn the questions that they answer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What do they offer?<\/strong>&nbsp;Many landing pages will have interactive features such as tools, templates, calculators, etc., so take note of these&nbsp;ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming back to Asana, its landing page for task management talks&nbsp;about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is task management?<\/li>\n<li>What does task management software do?<\/li>\n<li>Key benefits of using task management software&nbsp;<ul>\n<li>One place with all information<\/li>\n<li>Prioritize<\/li>\n<li>Improve collaboration<\/li>\n<li>Track progress<\/li>\n<li>Due dates and deadlines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Asana features, e.g., \u201cSee your tasks in different views\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Using team task management tools&nbsp;<ul>\n<li>Create a priority to-do&nbsp;list<\/li>\n<li>Start with the most difficult tasks<\/li>\n<li>Focus on one task at a&nbsp;time<\/li>\n<li>Set deadlines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Companies using Asana (logos)<\/li>\n<li>CTA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It gives you a pretty clear indication of the most important elements (definition, benefits, use cases, and trust signals) that you should include on your SEO landing page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also sometimes find useful insights into intent by checking the page\u2019s keyword rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if we do this for Asana\u2019s page using the <strong>Organic keywords<\/strong> report in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>, we see that it\u2019s ranking for quite a few terms that include the words \u201cteam\u201d or \u201cgroup\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/9-organic-keywords-report.png\" alt=\"Filtering for keywords suitable for an SEO landing page in the Organic Keywords report\" width=\"1522\" height=\"1090\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This gives us some insight into the kind of person searching for task management software, which is more likely to be people responsible for managing teams than solopreneurs. It\u2019s information like this that will help us design and create a landing page suited to searchers\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back at the landing page itself, we can also see it gives practical task management tips but does not have an interactive feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s clear then that a well-laid-out, informative landing page is what you want to build to compete with&nbsp;Asana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To contrast this example: <a href=\"https:\/\/toggl.com\/track\/online-timer\/\">This page<\/a> is the opposite! It doesn\u2019t <em>talk<\/em> about online stopwatches\u2014it <em>is<\/em> an online stopwatch. Your strategy to design a competitive landing page will be to create an interactive feature as&nbsp;well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nail-your-on-page-seo\">4. Nail your on-page SEO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve got a good-looking landing page with a compelling CTA, let\u2019s make sure that Google loves your page&nbsp;too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This quick and dirty on-page SEO checklist will allow you to meet ranking factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Did you place the main keyword in the&nbsp;URL?<\/li>\n<li>Is your URL short and focused?<\/li>\n<li>Did you create a compelling page <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/title-tag-seo\/\">title tag<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/meta-description\/\">meta description<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Are you using the main keyword in your H1? However, a good starting point is to look under the hood of your competitors\u2019 landing pages and see where they are getting their links from.
