That\u2019s why many companies divide their leads into subcategories. These vary from company to company, but the two most common are marketing-qualified leads (MQLs) and sales-qualified leads (SQLs).<\/p>\n<h3>1. Marketing-qualified leads (MQLs)<\/h3>\n<p>Marketing-qualified leads (MQLs) are leads that have interacted with your marketing but are not ready to buy. For example, they might have attended your webinar or downloaded a free&nbsp;eBook.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Sales-qualified leads (SQLs)<\/h3>\n<p>Sales-qualified leads (SQLs) are leads that have taken actions to indicate their desire to buy. For example, they might have signed up for a trial or requested a quote. You\u2019ll need a way&nbsp;to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Attract<\/strong>&nbsp;people to your website or webpage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engage<\/strong>&nbsp;them so they\u2019ll be willing to share their contact information with you (we call this the \u201coffer\u201d).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capture<\/strong>&nbsp;this contact information.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/lead_generation.png\" alt><\/p>\n<p>Most people set up their lead generation campaigns in reverse order, so let\u2019s look at these steps in more detail, starting with the lead capture.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Lead capture<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ll need a way to capture a potential lead\u2019s contact information. This can be as simple as setting up a form on your&nbsp;site:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/ahrefs-blog-email-capture.png\" alt><\/p>\n<p>Precisely what information you ask for depends on your business\u2019s needs. Common options include name, email, and phone number but you can ask for anything you like. Things like organization size and budget are common in&nbsp;B2B.<\/p>\n<p>Just know that the more information you ask for, the less likely people are to fill in the form. This is not necessarily a bad thing because the people that make more effort are typically better leads.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Offer<\/h3>\n<p>A visitor to your website won\u2019t hand over their contact information without some enticement. There are a variety of ways to do this. It all depends on your niche and who you\u2019re targeting. You have a landing page offering a free eBook on how to improve penalties.<\/p>\n<p>To drive traffic to this page, you&nbsp;could:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Run PPC ads, e.g., FB\/Twitter\/Google ads.<\/li>\n<li>Create content that ranks on Google and link to that&nbsp;page.<\/li>\n<li>Promote the page on social media.<\/li>\n<li>Appear on podcasts and promote the&nbsp;page.<\/li>\n<li>Promote the page on communities, like&nbsp;Quora.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is merely a sample of what you can do. It\u2019s the basis of what is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/inbound-marketing\/\">inbound marketing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Traffic<\/h4>\n<p>For your posts to get traffic month after month, you\u2019ll have to make sure they <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-rank-higher-on-google\/\">rank high on Google<\/a>. Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising<\/h3>\n<p>PPC is when you pay for clicks to your website.<\/p>\n<h4>Traffic<\/h4>\n<p>Pay a platform like Google or Facebook to show your ads to their users. You\u2019ll pay a fee each time someone clicks your ad. Offer to create something useful for their audience, like a webinar, eBook, or course. You\u2019ll get traffic to your offer when they promote it to their audience.<\/p>\n<p>We did this a couple of years ago with Buffer, a social media scheduling tool.<\/p>\n<h4>Offer<\/h4>\n<p>Tailor your offer to the audience of your business partner.
