Then we asked 15 SEO hiring managers\u2014both agency and client-side\u2014to see if these responsibilities, skills and requirements resonated with them. It\u2019s not gospel. Depending on whether you\u2019re an agency or an in-house team, the particular SEO specialist you\u2019re looking for will differ. Add or remove items from each section as you wish. If a skill from the \u201cdesirables\u201d section is crucial in the role you\u2019re hiring, then shift it to the \u201cRequirements\u201d section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond that, here are some more&nbsp;tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Add a brief description of your company<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t expect people to know what your company is about. Give a brief description of what your company does. You can add this part right at the beginning, before your description of the&nbsp;job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, companies include their brand\u2019s mission statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/1-groupon.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think your mission and vision adds value, feel free to include it. However, try to avoid the corporate jargon. KlientBoost\u2019s job description offers a good example of how to do this&nbsp;well:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2-klientboost-job-description.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They know that new hires are concerned over the company\u2019s culture. So, rather than an empty slogan created by C-suites in their once-a-year holiday retreat, they addressed the main concern directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Give clear instructions on how to&nbsp;apply<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of hiring is not to get as many applicants as possible. It is time consuming to have to sieve through tons of resumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, you should focus on finding relevant and qualified people. A good way to do this is to include how you\u2019d like them to apply. This will dissuade lazy job applicants whose only strategy is to mass mail their resumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in our job listing, we specifically stated what we want our applicants to&nbsp;do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/3-ahrefs-job-description.jpg\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Give the best applicants a reason to&nbsp;apply<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every company wants to hire A-players. But there aren\u2019t many of them to go around. So, you have to tell these applicants why they should choose you over other companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This usually means talking about salary and type of benefits your company offers. However, it\u2019s not limited to that. This wasn\u2019t a scientific process by any means; we did it by eye. Then we created a survey based on those patterns and sent it to 20 SEO hiring managers. 15 replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey was split into two sections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Responsibilities<\/li>\n<li>Skills and requirements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look at the responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Responsibilities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In this section, we presented SEO hiring managers with 19 of the most common responsibilities from SEO Specialist job descriptions. Then we asked whether or not each of these would be a day-to-day responsibility for their \u2018SEO Specialist\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/1-seo-job-description-1.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To no one\u2019s surprise, standard SEO duties like keyword research, on-page SEO and technical SEO are part of the expected day-to-day responsibilities. So are other key tasks like collaborating with other teams (especially content teams), reporting, presenting SEO strategies and recommendations to internal\/external stakeholders, and developing new SEO&nbsp;tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping up-to-date with the latest industry news and trends is also an expected part of the job. However, SEO specialists are not expected to create content and build&nbsp;links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, we didn\u2019t presume to know everything so we added a question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote>Are there other roles and responsibilities you\u2019d like to add that aren\u2019t on this&nbsp;list?<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While a couple of people gave&nbsp;more specific examples of responsibilities, I thought this answer from Jessica Levenson&nbsp;was worth highlighting:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">Honestly, it\u2019s a skillset. I want someone that is curious. They don\u2019t have to have all the skills, they have to be willing to learn and be perpetually curious.<\/div><div class=\"quote-info clearfix\"><div class=\"quote-photo\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jessica Levenson\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/jessica-levenson.jpeg\"><\/div><div class=\"extra-box\"><span class=\"quote-author\">Jessica Levenson,<\/span> <span class=\"quote-author-job\">Head of Digital Strategy &amp; SEO <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/guerillagirl\" target=\"_blank\">Oracle NetSuite<\/a><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:post-content -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>Skills and requirements<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In this section, we presented the SEO hiring managers with 15 of the most common skills and requirements from SEO Specialist job descriptions. We then asked if these skills were very important, somewhat important or not important to them if they were hiring a \u2018SEO Specialist\u2019.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Here are the results.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2-seo-job-description-1.png\"><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Interestingly, we can see that the skills that most, if not all respondents, agreed on are soft skills (e.g., attention to detail, data-driven mindset, communication) or attitude (e.g., passion for SEO and internet marketing).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As Jessica Levenson added,<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\"> Aptitude over experience is always my stance. I can teach anyone SEO provided they are willing and able. On the flip side, I cannot untrain tough personalities or an unwillingness to&nbsp;learn.<\/div><div class=\"quote-info clearfix\"><div class=\"quote-photo\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jessica Levenson\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/jessica-levenson.jpeg\"><\/div><div class=\"extra-box\"><span class=\"quote-author\">Jessica Levenson,<\/span> <span class=\"quote-author-job\">Head of Digital Strategy &amp; SEO <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/guerillagirl\" target=\"_blank\">Oracle NetSuite<\/a><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Of course, that doesn\u2019t mean that hard skills are not required. The respondents still agreed that a good understanding of SEO best practices, good technical SEO skills and prior experience in the SEO industry is preferred.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>How many years experience do hiring managers look for, exactly? Most of them said a minimum of 2+&nbsp;years.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/3-seo-job-description.png\"><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Besides years of experience in the industry, most respondents also preferred that their SEO specialist have some experience with SEO&nbsp;tools.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Here\u2019s what they said after we asked which SEO tools in particular:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/4-seo-job-description.png\"><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Finally, most of them said \u201cunderstanding code\u201d was somewhat important. And here are the coding languages they said were important.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/5-seo-job-description.png\"><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":2} -->\n<h2>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Technical skills are important. But as most of the respondents highlighted, attitude is even more crucial. If you eventually find a candidate that is coachable and has great teamwork, but lacks certain hard skills, don\u2019t be afraid to take a chance on&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/marketing-skills\/\">Marketing skills<\/a>&nbsp;can always be taught to the right person.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>If you\u2019re reading this as a potential employee in the SEO industry, don\u2019t be&nbsp;disheartened. Almost all of them agreed that a college degree and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-certification\/\">online certifications<\/a> are not necessary at all. That is in line with the experiences of most of us here at Ahrefs too\u2014a majority of the marketing team hold no qualifications in marketing.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Instead, focus on cultivating the right attitude. Here\u2019s what you should strive to be good at, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SaijoGeorge\">Saijo George<\/a>:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to learn and unlearn things quickly;<\/li>\n<li>Inquisitive mind;<\/li>\n<li>Try and figure out a problem, but if you can\u2019t, you should be able to ask for&nbsp;help;<\/li>\n<li>Willing to share your knowledge and expertise with the broader team;<\/li>\n<li>Above all, be a team player.
