But that\u2019s not the only reason it\u2019s important. It also gives you some insight&nbsp;into whether your SEO efforts are paying off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, our visibility for all our tracked keywords is improving over&nbsp;time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Pasted_Image_19_05_2021__11_28.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This tells us that our SEO efforts are having the desired effect on the whole. If visibility were declining&nbsp;overall,&nbsp;that might be something we\u2019d want to investigate further to hone our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/orchard-seo-strategy\/\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-strategy\/\">SEO strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most rank trackers also give you various ways to slice and dice the data for even more actionable insights, which we\u2019ll talk about shortly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why can\u2019t you just check rankings yourself?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rank trackers save time by automating the rank tracking process. But if you only have a few keywords to track, you might be wondering why not just type them into Google and check ranking positions manually?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is that manual rank checking rarely gives an accurate view of reality because Google\u2019s search results are heavily personalized based on things like&nbsp;your:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Location<\/li>\n<li>Browsing history<\/li>\n<li>Language<\/li>\n<li>Device (desktop\/mobile)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, these are the search results for \u201chow to make flapjacks\u201d in the&nbsp;UK:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2-flapjacks.jpg\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If we use Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo-toolbar\">SEO Toolbar<\/a>&nbsp;to simulate the exact same search from the US, the results are completely different:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/3-flapjacks-us-search.jpg\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This happens because the definition of flapjacks varies between nations. In the UK, it\u2019s an oat bar. In the US and Canada, it\u2019s a pancake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about going incognito?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Using an incognito browser tab solves the issue of personalization based on browsing history, but it doesn\u2019t solve anything else. Your IP address remains visible, so Google will still personalize the search results based on your location and inferred language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, here\u2019s that \u201chow to make flapjacks\u201d search in an incognito tab:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/4-flapjacks-incognito.jpg\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Google still shows recipes for British flapjacks because it knows my IP address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bottomline: even if you just want to check rankings for one or two keywords, you should use a rank checker. Ahrefs is an SEO toolset with its own <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/rank-tracker\">rank tracker<\/a>. We think it\u2019s one of the best on the market but we\u2019re clearly biased, so I won\u2019t insult your intelligence by creating a list of the \u2018best\u2019 rank trackers with Ahrefs at the&nbsp;top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what I will share are the results of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/thelabresults\/permalink\/3046536218959269\/\">a recent Facebook poll<\/a>&nbsp;by Matt Diggity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/6-matt-diggity-poll.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, only two of the top five are standalone rank tracking tools. The others are included as part of an all-in-one SEO toolset like Ahrefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This leads me to an interesting point\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re doing SEO in any serious capacity in 2021, you\u2019ll need an all-in-one SEO tool like Ahrefs for crucial tasks like <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/keyword-research\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-research\/\">keyword research<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/link-building\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-building\/\">link building<\/a>. Given that most of these tools include a rank tracker, arguably the best rank tracker for most people is the one included with <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/vs\">their favorite SEO toolset<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, if you\u2019re yet to invest in an all-in-one SEO toolset or would just prefer a standalone rank tracker, what features should you be looking for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few features you might&nbsp;need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Location support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rankings vary from location to location. If your website or business primarily serves the US market, you\u2019ll want to track rankings in the US. If it primarily serves the UK market, you\u2019ll want to track UK rankings. If it primarily serves the Canadian market\u2026 you get the&nbsp;idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might even want to track rankings across multiple countries if you\u2019re working for a multinational corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/rank-tracker\">Rank Tracker<\/a>&nbsp;supports most countries; 187&nbsp;and counting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re doing local SEO, you\u2019ll want a rank tracker with more granularity so you can track rankings at the state, city or zip code level\u2014as you can in Ahrefs\u2019 Rank Tracker:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/7-location.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Language support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your website targets a locale with more than one official\/common language, you\u2019ll probably want to track rankings in multiple languages within that locale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, say you run a restaurant in Barcelona. This city is in Catalonia where, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Languages_of_Catalonia\">according to Wikipedia<\/a>, there\u2019s a pretty even mix of Spanish and Catalan speakers. If your restaurant\u2019s website is available in both languages, as is the case for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brugarolbarcelona.com\/\">this one<\/a>, you\u2019ll probably want to track rankings for both Spanish and Catalan searchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how you\u2019d do that in Ahrefs\u2019 Rank Tracker:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/8-language.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Device support (desktop\/mobile)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Desktop and mobile ranking signals aren\u2019t identical, so it\u2019s not uncommon for rankings to vary between desktop and mobile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, desktop users typically have faster internet connections than mobile users, so it might be a more important ranking factor on mobile than desktop. In other words, if you have a slow site, it might negatively impact mobile rankings more than desktop rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a couple of other things that may cause ranking discrepancies across devices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Poor mobile friendliness<\/li>\n<li>More intrusive ads\/interstitials on one device over the&nbsp;other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re using Ahrefs\u2019 Rank Tracker, you can easily toggle between mobile and desktop rankings and check average positions across devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/9-mobile-desktop.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SERP feature tracking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SERP features are non-traditional search results like featured snippets and top stories carousels. Instead, you should use a rank tracker to identify ways to improve SEO and get more organic traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at a few ways to do&nbsp;that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#find-featured-snippets\">Find the best featured snippet opportunities<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#share-of-voice\">Track organic search share of voice by&nbsp;topic<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#find-low-hanging-opportunities\">Find low-hanging opportunities to beat competitors<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#refresh-pages\">Find pages that are ready for a refresh<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#find-competitors\">Find competitors to kickstart your keyword research<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> We\u2019ll be using Ahrefs\u2019 Rank Tracker in the examples below, but many other rank trackers have similar features and functionalities.&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"find-featured-snippets\">Find the best featured snippet opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Featured snippets are short answers that often appear at the top of Google\u2019s search results. They\u2019re pulled from one of the top-ranking pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Google pulls this snippet from <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/hreflang-tags\/\">our guide to hreflangs<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/11-hreflang.jpg\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By winning featured snippets, you can often shortcut your way to the top of Google and boost organic traffic in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you find featured snippet opportunities?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for keywords with featured snippets that you don\u2019t currently own where you also rank in the top 10. You can often win these just by adding or editing the content on your&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re familiar with Ahrefs, you\u2019ll know you can do this for any website in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>. Just head to the <strong>Organic Keywords 2.0<\/strong>&nbsp;report, filter for featured snippets, and check the \u201cwhere target doesn\u2019t rank box\u201d to see unowned snippets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/12-serp-features-organic-keywords.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But there\u2019s one big benefit to doing this in Rank Tracker: You can see the historic prevalence of the featured snippet over&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is useful because it\u2019s likely not worth pursuing featured snippets if Google rarely shows them in the&nbsp;SERP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, there\u2019s currently a featured snippet showing for \u201cfind email address\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/13-find-email-address.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, if we click the caret and check the SERP feature history, we see that Google is only showing the featured snippet sporadically. It\u2019s only been spotted in the SERP by Rank Tracker for a handful of days in the past&nbsp;month:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/12-find-email-address-featured-snippet.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For \u201cecommerce SEO,\u201d on the other hand, Google is consistently showing the featured snippet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/13-ecommerce-seo-featured-snippet.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, for us, it would make more sense to pursue the featured snippet for \u201cecommerce SEO\u201d over \u201cfind email address\u201d because its prevalence presents a greater traffic opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"share-of-voice\">Track organic search share of voice by&nbsp;topic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Organic search share of voice tells you how much market share various websites own for a given set of keywords. In this case, your tracked keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you can see this in Rank Tracker, you first need to specify one or more competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t done this already, head to the <strong>Competitors Overview<\/strong>&nbsp;tab, hit the option to add competitors, then enter the competitors\u2019 domains or paths you want to track. If you\u2019re not sure who your competitors are, check the suggestions based on keyword intersections and hit the \u201c+\u201d button to add them to your project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Ahrefs Blog, we\u2019ll add Backlinko and the Moz&nbsp;blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/14-competitors.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> We added the Moz blog as a path instead of a domain so we\u2019re only tracking organic search share of voice for content under their \/blog\/ subfolder rather than their entire site.
