One person argues it\u2019s branding; another argues it\u2019s strategic thinking. Add performance marketing, data science, and soft skills like management into the mix and you\u2019ll see that the list is endless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there a right or wrong answer? I don\u2019t think so. Think about it: <strong>Career advice is autobiographical<\/strong>. It depends on the marketing role you\u2019re in and what skills you picked up along the way that helped. Copywriting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven years ago, I read a book called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Education-Millionaires-Everything-College-Successful\/dp\/1591845610\">The Education of Millionaires<\/a>. The book emphasized the importance of copywriting, which got me interested. Later on, I read a few books on the topic, practiced by creating my own newsletter, and eventually wrote most of the copy on my site\u2019s blog, landing pages, and emails. And I\u2019ve been doing that ever since, writing copy and content for the companies I work&nbsp;for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working in digital marketing means it\u2019s almost impossible to avoid writing. Whether you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-write-a-blog-post\/\">creating a blog post<\/a>, a tweet, ad copy, or scripting a video, you\u2019re writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you\u2019re unable to capture and hold someone\u2019s attention via your words, your marketing campaigns will always be less effective than they could be. To write great&nbsp;copy, you have to know who you\u2019re selling to. You have to do customer research\u2014know what they want, need, and how they talk. All of these will make you a better marketer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get started<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing is to forget what you\u2019ve learned in school. Writing online is different from academic writing. If you write like how you did for school, your blog audience will be&nbsp;zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, pick up a few resources that\u2019ll teach you the basics of good copywriting. There\u2019s no way around it. To learn how to write, you have to <em>actually<\/em>&nbsp;write. Content marketing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Back then, I didn\u2019t have many resources to work with. So, blogging seemed like a good way to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-drive-traffic-to-your-website\/\">get traffic to my website<\/a>&nbsp;without spending a lot of money. This naturally got me into content marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Content marketing is hot today. Look at the meteoric rise in interest over&nbsp;time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/1-content-marketing-google-trends.png\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/marketing-statistics\">HubSpot<\/a>, 70% of marketers are actively investing in content marketing. There are tons of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-marketing-examples\/\">examples of people using content marketing<\/a>&nbsp;to build successful businesses. Ahrefs is one. But there are others like Luxy Hair, Beardbrand, Shopify, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, why is content marketing popular? A few reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It nurtures and converts leads.<\/strong>&nbsp;Most people don\u2019t buy immediately. Instead, they go on a \u201cjourney\u201d\u2014they search around, read reviews, consume content and talk to other people. Content marketing helps you match <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/buyers-journey\/\">each stage of this journey<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It educates potential customers.<\/strong>&nbsp;Customers are better-positioned to buy your product if they know how to use it to fix their problems. Most articles got traffic in the beginning but faded to nothing after some&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/3-flatline-of-nope.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, the blog posts that steadily got more traffic were the ones that <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-rank-higher-on-google\">ranked in Google<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/4-passive-traffic.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Investigating this led me to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-is-seo\/\">SEO<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/learn-seo\/\">Learning SEO<\/a>&nbsp;has skyrocketed my understanding of content marketing. Rather than running aimlessly on the content creation hamster wheel and trying to get more traffic by publishing more, SEO taught me how to create <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/evergreen-content\/\">evergreen content<\/a>&nbsp;that gets passive traffic over&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/seo-content\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-content\/\">SEO-driven content marketing<\/a>&nbsp;is often cheaper in the long-term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/\">Ahrefs blog<\/a>&nbsp;ranks for ~175,000 keywords and generates an estimated 373,000 monthly search visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/5-ahrefs-blog-metrics.png\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we had to acquire all that traffic via Google ads, it would cost us $965,000 per month (or $11.58M annually). Networking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I got my job at Ahrefs via networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I first met <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timsoulo\">Tim<\/a>, our Chief Marketing Officer, at an event here in Singapore. Then, later on,&nbsp;I:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consumed all Ahrefs content and promoted them on social media, Reddit, GrowthHackers, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Interviewed Tim for a guest article on another blog;<\/li>\n<li>Helped out with the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/academy\/blogging-for-business\">Blogging for Business<\/a>&nbsp;by promoting it and connecting Tim with influencers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, I did all of the above for free. Tim didn\u2019t ask me to do it, and I didn\u2019t ask for anything in return. And the rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the adage goes: \u201cIt\u2019s not what you know, it\u2019s who you know that matters.\u201d Most people loathe to admit it, but it\u2019s true. (Except for the first part\u2014skills are important too.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People want to work with people they know and trust. And networking is a shortcut for that process. It\u2019s not just about getting jobs either. With a decent network, you&nbsp;can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Get feedback on your product, work, or business.<\/li>\n<li>Get shortcuts to fix any issues you\u2019re facing since people in your network might have encountered similar problems.<\/li>\n<li>Get alternative viewpoints.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As Matthew Howells-Barby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matthewbarby.com\/careers-in-marketing\/\">writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a limit to how much you can teach yourself. Not only this, but there are also some problems that you\u2019ll likely never face yourself. This is where learning through others is imperative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pretty much once a week for the past couple of years, I\u2019ve met with one person that I didn\u2019t previously know that works in a similar role to me at a different company. This could be a 15-to-20-minute call, grabbing a coffee in person or with me taking a trip over to their office. In Adam Grant\u2019s book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Give-Take-Helping-Others-Success\/dp\/0143124986\">Give and Take<\/a>, these people are called \u201ctakers.\u201d They take and never return. And let\u2019s be honest: we can smell these people from&nbsp;afar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a surefire way to be horrible at networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, you should be a \u201cgiver.\u201d You\u2019re not doing something because you expect a favor. You\u2019re just genuinely helpful and always giving value. Work prioritization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people mistakenly believe that productivity is doing as much work as possible within a limited time frame. But you could easily deceive yourself by creating a list of trivial tasks and checking them off&nbsp;fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is that real productivity? I don\u2019t think&nbsp;so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This happens because we don\u2019t have a clear idea of what work we should be prioritizing. We don\u2019t plan what we want to accomplish before we enter the office\/turn on our laptop and end up sucked into the emergencies of the&nbsp;day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you want to be productive and do real work, you\u2019ll have to learn how to prioritize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get started<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting Things Done, Eisenhower Matrix, Bullet Journal\u2014there are tons of models, books, and courses that\u2019ll teach you how to tackle this particular skill. They <strong>all<\/strong>&nbsp;work. But it\u2019ll be up to your personality, preference, and implementation as to whether they\u2019ll work for&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, for me, I follow a system known as the <strong>Weekly\/Daily Goals<\/strong>. It consists of three&nbsp;rules:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each week, create a weekly to-do.<\/li>\n<li>Each night, create a daily to-do (based on the weekly to-do).<\/li>\n<li>Each day, focus on completing the daily to-dos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s incredibly simple, but that\u2019s where the secret lies. A productivity\/prioritization system has to be simple, or it\u2019s hard to adhere to. What works for one company may not work for&nbsp;yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, you must always be testing and figuring out what works and what doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, you must think like a scientist, i.e., have an experiment mindset. Look at everything as an experiment. Failure is not failure but merely a data point. It is temporary, and what you learn will help you progress forward in learning more about your business, your customers, and your industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get started<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t really a skill but a mindset shift you have to adopt. I like how <a href=\"https:\/\/sive.rs\/tvtest\">Derek Sivers puts it<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/6-derek-sivers-quote.jpg\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What experiment could you try for the next 30&nbsp;days?<\/li>\n<li>What happens if you tried doing the opposite for just 48&nbsp;hours?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then test it and see what happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to practice and improve your marketing skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ultralearning-Master-Outsmart-Competition-Accelerate-ebook\/dp\/B07K6MF8MD\">Ultralearning<\/a>, author Scott Young talks about a concept called directness. Basically, you should know how you\u2019re going to use the skill you\u2019re learning. Then, practice using that skill in that particular situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put simply: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/2020\/05\/04\/do-the-real-thing\/\">do the real thing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For certain activities, we understand it intuitively. To learn how to do a push-up, you have to do push-ups. Yet, when it comes to marketing, a lot of us abandon directness for fake alternatives, like spending all our time-consuming articles and convincing ourselves we\u2019re \u201clearning.\u201d It\u2019s not just you\u2014I\u2019m guilty of it&nbsp;too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Passive learning is fun and feels like learning. And while it can be helpful, it doesn\u2019t actively improve your skills. To pick up or improve any marketing skills, you have to <em>actually<\/em>&nbsp;do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copywriting? Write. Email outreach? Send emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your job allows, incorporate practice into your work. For example, if you want to learn copywriting, volunteer to write a blog post for your company blog. Or perhaps you could make suggestions on how to improve a landing page\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-write-a-headline\/\">headline<\/a>. If you\u2019re already a creator, then see if you can incorporate the new copywriting principles you\u2019ve learned into your content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s difficult to practice during work, don\u2019t fret. Create a website on the side, then use it to practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, bear in mind that I\u2019m not discouraging reading or learning. They\u2019re great and can uncover ideas you might want to test. But spending all your time consuming is not practice. And we can always do more of&nbsp;that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Further thoughts about skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussions about marketing skills eventually run up against this topic: should you be a specialist or generalist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the debate about which marketing skills you should acquire, I don\u2019t believe there\u2019s a \u201cright\u201d answer. It comes down to what you want out of your career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for monetary success, then being a specialist is probably better. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevin-indig.com\/blog\/become-a-specialist-if-you-want-a-career-in-digital-marketing\/\">Kevin Indig argues<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>Increasing your value is easier as a specialist than a generalist. You can connect better and faster with people because the field is smaller. You can build out hard skills quicker from deep knowledge in one thing, compared to shallow knowledge in many things. Soft skills are necessary for both functions but more crucial for managers. This means you have broad skills\/knowledge across all things marketing but excel in one particular area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/marketing-skills.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can even consider going further and excel in two (\u03c0-shaped) or three (M-shaped) areas of marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, another way to think about which skills to acquire is to create a unique talent stack that <strong>only you have<\/strong>. Scott Adams of Dilbert fame popularized this&nbsp;idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he wasn\u2019t the best artist, best comedian, nor best businessman in the world.
