The easiest way to do this is to head to your keyword list in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>, then go to the <strong>Traffic Share by Domains<\/strong>&nbsp;report to see which websites get the most traffic from those keywords.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/6-traffic-share.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Look for websites that seem focused on your topic, then hit the caret and go to the <strong>Top Pages<\/strong>&nbsp;report to see which of their pages attract the most estimated search traffic.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/7-traffic-share.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In our case, we see some good content ideas with search traffic potential that we couldn\u2019t have otherwise found, such&nbsp;as:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>keurig troubleshooting<\/li>\n<li>nespresso reusable pods<\/li>\n<li>how to descale a keurig<\/li>\n<li>how to steam&nbsp;milk<\/li>\n<li>nespresso vs keurig&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/8-top-pages.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>If you want even more ideas, repeat this process for more competitors. Just go to the <strong>Competing Domains<\/strong>&nbsp;report in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>, look for relevant sites, hit the caret to check estimated search traffic, then plug the site into Site Explorer and check the <strong>Top Pages <\/strong>report.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re looking for content ideas for YouTube<\/strong>, you first need to find competing channels. Do this by searching YouTube for a topic you\u2019ve already found. People on these platforms have already subscribed to your content, so you don\u2019t necessarily need to publish stuff they\u2019re searching for. You just need to publish stuff they\u2019ll find interesting.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> This is also kind of true for YouTube as you\u2019ll often attract video views from the \u201csuggested\u201d recommendations in the sidebar.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s are a few ways to do&nbsp;that:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Check your analytics<\/strong>. Most email marketing tools tell you which emails got the most engagement in terms of opens and clicks, and most social media platforms tell you which are your best-forming posts. Use this data to better understand your audience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check customer feedback. <\/strong>Look for common queries in customer support tickets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check internal site searches.<\/strong> Look at what your visitors are searching for on your site using <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/web-analytics\">Ahrefs\u2019 Web Analytics<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask or survey your customers.<\/strong>&nbsp;Nobody knows what kind of content your customers want to see better than your customers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>You can also use keyword research to find ideas even if you\u2019re not creating content for a search-focused channel. After all, if lots of people are searching for something, it\u2019s clear that lots of people are interested in it. Such topics will often do well on non-search-focused channels like social media and email&nbsp;too.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pick-content-type-format\">2. Pick a content type and format<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Assuming that you\u2019ve picked a topic from your list of ideas, the next step is to decide on the type and format of content you\u2019re going to create.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Content type<\/h4>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re creating content for YouTube, the content type is already decided for you: video. It\u2019s the same story for email and social media: you\u2019ll be writing some kind of email or social media&nbsp;post.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019re creating content for your website, you have a few different options, including:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Blog post<\/li>\n<li>Product page<\/li>\n<li>Landing page<\/li>\n<li>Interactive tool<\/li>\n<li>Wiki\/help article<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The best content type for the job will depend on the topic and purpose of your content.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>For example, if we wanted to share some <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-tips\/\">SEO tips<\/a>, a blog post would be the best content type because its purpose is to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/increase-brand-awareness\/\">increase brand awareness<\/a> and educate potential customers. Just choose the one that seems most appropriate for the&nbsp;topic.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re creating content for your website or YouTube<\/strong>, the search results can help you to understand what format might work&nbsp;best.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>For example, if we search Google for \u201cguest blogging\u201d, we see that all of the top-ranking blog posts are guides:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/14-serps.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>If we do the same thing in YouTube, they\u2019re all how-tos and listicles:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/15-youtube-serps.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"plan-create-publish\">3. Plan, create and publish<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The process for creating your content is essentially the same regardless of its intended channel, type, and format.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan<\/li>\n<li>Create<\/li>\n<li>Publish<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/02_content_creation.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a deeper look at each part of the process:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Planning<\/h4>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Planning starts with creating an outline. If you\u2019re creating short posts for social media, this might not strictly be necessary. But it\u2019s undoubtedly the best approach for more complex types of content like blog posts and videos.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>This is how we start nearly every post and video&nbsp;we publish.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>For example, here\u2019s my outline for this very article:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/16-outline.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>How did I decide what to include?<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>As the purpose of this post is to rank in organic search, my starting point was to analyze relevant top-ranking pages for common subtopics.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>To do this, I plugged a few top-ranking guides into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-gap\">Content Gap tool<\/a>&nbsp;and set the number of intersections to the maximum to see the keywords that all of these pages ranked for. This revealed a couple of pretty obvious subtopics to include:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/17-content-gap.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>I also used <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo-toolbar\">Ahrefs SEO Toolbar\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;free on-page SEO report to check the subheadings in top-ranking posts for common subtopics. This revealed that most of the posts talked about why content is important, so I added that to my outline.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>However, I didn\u2019t only take inspiration from top-ranking posts. I also added a section on scaling content (see below). None of the top-ranking posts talk about this, but I know from experience that many content creators face this problem. I also felt I could share some valuable insights to differentiate our post from everything else out&nbsp;there.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Remember, there\u2019s rarely much point in creating a carbon copy of the content that\u2019s already out there. If you want people to remember your content, you need to go the extra&nbsp;mile.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating<\/h4>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>With your outline nailed, it\u2019s time to put your head down and flesh out your content.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve shared tips and processes for doing this efficiently in a bunch of posts, but here are a few tips to get you started:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Just write.<\/strong>&nbsp;It\u2019s easy to procrastinate and stare at a blank page for hours. I\u2019ve done it a million times. Combat this by forcing yourself to write without editing. Even if you think what you\u2019re writing is dumb, don\u2019t stop. Just keep writing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use a proven intro formula.<\/strong>&nbsp;Your introduction is arguably the most important part of your content but also the hardest. Combat this by using a proven introduction formula like the PAS formula.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use the inverted pyramid method.<\/strong>&nbsp;Most people bury important information under \u2018nice to know\u2019 fluff. Don\u2019t do this. Format, finalize, and upload your content for your chosen channel, and you\u2019re off to the races. But there\u2019s only so much you can do on your own. If you truly want to scale your content efforts, you\u2019ll need to involve other people and systemize your processes.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In this section, we\u2019ll cover five ways to do that based on our experience:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#put-someone-in-charge\">Put someone in charge of each channel<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#break-process-down\">Break the content creation process down into bite-sized tasks<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#create-SOPs\">Create SOPs<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#hire-knowledgeable-writers\">Hire knowledgeable writers<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#use-a-content-calendar\">Use a content calendar<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#repurpose-content\">Repurpose content for multiple channels<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"put-someone-in-charge\">Put someone in charge of each channel<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Creating and managing content for every marketing channel on your own is an impossible task. You need to delegate that responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how we do things at Ahrefs. We create content for two main channels: the blog and YouTube. I\u2019m in charge of the blog, and Sam\u2019s in charge of YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s are a few key responsibilities for each channel coordinator:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plan and coordinating content.<\/strong>&nbsp;What gets published and when? Which tasks need to be completed before we can go live with the content?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hire content creators<\/strong>. Scaling content means hiring more content creators. These might be bloggers, scriptwriters, or something else. Either way, someone has to find and vet these people. (By the way, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/jobs\">we\u2019re hiring<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Create content and style guidelines.<\/strong>&nbsp;Everyone needs to be on the same page if you\u2019re going to scale and maintain a consistent brand voice. Content guidelines help with this. <em>(We\u2019re still working on&nbsp;ours.)&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s possible to put one person in charge of multiple channels, but it\u2019s rarely efficient. If you spread people too thin, they\u2019ll just produce lots of mediocre content for many channels instead of exceptional content for one channel.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"break-process-down\">Break the content creation process down into bite-sized tasks<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>There are lots of moving parts when creating content. You can\u2019t just hammer out a blog post and have it ready for publishing. You need images, formatting, editing, and probably a bunch of other things too.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Just as it\u2019s inefficient for one person to take the reins of multiple channels, it\u2019s inefficient for one person to do all this&nbsp;stuff.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>How can you solve&nbsp;this?<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Break the process down into smaller tasks and assign each one to the best person for the&nbsp;job.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what our content creation process looks like for the&nbsp;blog:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/03_content_creation.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Each color represents a different person on our&nbsp;team.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"create-SOPs\">Create SOPs<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-sops\/\">SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)<\/a> are documents explaining how to do specific tasks within your organization. You should create them for as many of the bite-sized&nbsp;tasks from the previous step as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>For example, here\u2019s our image naming SOP for blog&nbsp;posts:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/9UvRk54nXY-PbdPGTlsUDVX0OJetmfyCJrm9lWixlUmj12fuufJSa_NON7PTH-3P7w2UvSn0dIGsRW4pYuy0YBcRSewWjayULEV_Foi0Uooe7qadSZ7H_-Hso_AIbJ-u63b3IH6w\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s nothing special, but having everything documented like this allows us to delegate each part of the content creation process more effectively. It also makes life easier when onboarding new employees, as our collection of SOPs effectively serves as a training library.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>We have SOPs for our video creation process, although Sam created these as he\u2019s in charge of that channel.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hire-knowledgeable-writers\">Hire knowledgeable writers<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Single-handedly creating every piece of content is virtually impossible, so you\u2019ll need to hire writers if you want to scale. But this is arguably where many people make a crucial mistake because they look for writers over subject matter experts.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s true that you need to hire good writers, they\u2019re unlikely to create any truly valuable content without first-hand knowledge and experience.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>This is why we never explicitly advertise for writers; we look for \u201ceducators\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-2021-06-03-at-15.04.51.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Our thinking is that it\u2019s easier to teach someone how to write better than it is to teach them how to do SEO. We also want our employees to share their own unique insights and experiences, so hiring writers just doesn\u2019t cut it for&nbsp;us.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>However, not everyone does things this way. Plenty of brands have success scaling their content using more of a top-down approach. This is where a content strategist plans each piece, creates an outline, and sends it to a writer to turn into a fully-fledged piece.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The best approach isn\u2019t set in stone, it depends on many things like the complexity of your topics, brand voice, and logistics.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"use-a-content-calendar\">Use a content calendar<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Consistency is the name of the game with content creation, so it\u2019s key to plan ahead and keep track of everything in one&nbsp;place.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>This is where an editorial calendar comes in&nbsp;handy.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what ours looks like for the&nbsp;blog:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pasted-image-0.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is different, but we typically plan content 1-2 months ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Your content calendar should also list key details for each content piece.
