I'm guilty of trying to target the same old keywords for too long without looking around. I think tools should always be used in the process of keyword research but I've spent the last few weeks exploring different ways to come up with keywords.

I think exploring the terminology of your customers is probably the best place to start. Tools online are great places to start for this but there's nothing like picking up the phone and just calling them. I spent two days doing Voice of the Customer research a couple of weeks ago and i think this was the most valuable research I've done in a long time. It gave a lot of insights, both that can be used in product / services development, marketing strategy and also providing insights on the keywords that we should be targeting.

Reddit can definitely be a gold mine for finding out what kind of questions people are actually asking,

It's actually not as "generic" as one might think. It's not one big monolithic entity. Sure, the default subreddits kind of have a thing going on, but overall, it's more like a huge set of different forums hosted on one site.

There's a subreddit for just about everything, and if you can find ones that are relevant, you can find out a lot about what consumers want to know. It is true that this can be mildly challenging, though. There isn't really one big central directory of subreddits by topic, at least not an official one. The best way is to look at a subreddit's sidebar for links to other, relevant subs. There's also /r/findareddit, which can help you find a relevant sub.

Just be careful not to blatantly self-promote. Just participate in the community and gather information. Reddit is a place where people are very ad-averse, and it's not a platform where people want to have things marketed to them.

Hi,
The 4 methods you mentioned are very good. Those indeed are useful for a SEO beginner. It also shows that creativity involved in doing keyword research. One of the key points is that, you should not be over-excited by the volume and CPC scores that keyword research tools show. There are lot of keywords which are new and give good traffic, which are not spotted by the SEO tools.

I find that Ahrefs produces a very simple interface in giving such valuable advice regarding keyword research. I hope it gives a 1 month trial to fully test its features and help small bloggers like me.

Thanks.
Palla.

Hi Joshua,
This is a down to earth post on finding keywords the non-traditional way.

Yes, most website owners or marketers only limit themselves to traditional methods to find keywords, mostly rely on keyword research tools.

Would like to add to your point #3 User-Generated Content + Communities. If we take time and effort to dig further into this aspect, we are able to find some goldmines of untapped keywords.

One example is Reddit. From Wikipedia:
“As of 2016, Reddit had 542 million monthly visitors (234 million unique users), ranking #11 most visited web-site in US and #25 in the world. Across 2015, Reddit saw 82.54 billion pageviews, 73.15 million submissions, 725.85 million comments, and 6.89 billion upvotes from its users.”

To be frank, I have written a very in-depth step-by-step methodology complete with using a special tool to do Reddit keyword research [to mine untapped keyword or content ideas from Reddit communities].

If you wouldn't mind I could put the link (of the artile) in this discussion thread. Thanks
