Amazing post. If anyone is getting into this space and feels overwhelmed with the tools -- don't! Once you get the hang of some of them (i.e. Hubspot is a beast of a automation machine), you start to see the other pieces as complimentary to your goals, and how they all connect. (or what's needed).

This is a great article. It answered many questions that I struggle with internally. "Experience by far trumps education." - 100% agree. My education = a master's degree in architecture, but I've been working in marketing since 2010. I started out as a part-time writer, and worked my way through different roles (SEO, graphic design, link-building, content marketing, marketing strategy, etc.). This experience has really helped me understand the scope of our work & set realistic expectations for our clients.

Despite the fact that I've assumed the role of CMO in our company 18-months ago, I've always suffered from the imposter syndrome, and I think this is something many people working in digital marketing feel (I may be wrong). This is probably because the profession of marketing manager is, as you said, hard to define. It is probably also because I do many things that don't quite fit the bill (from auditing sites, to training new social media specialists, talking to clients, networking, creating content, or evaluating monthly performance & refining workflows). This probably makes me an awkwardly shaped T.

I look-up to successful CMOs (some of which you've listed) and ask myself "How do they do it?", "What makes them successful?" I was really impressed with Joanna Lord's speech at the MozCon ("How to Operationalize Growth for Maximum Revenue"). She is the CMO of ClassPass. She talked a lot about growth, the concept of T-shaped skillsets, and growth roadmaps. If you have the chance you should check out her deck and/or video.
